Chapter One Nothing Stays the Same:
Hi my name is Charlene Miller. And I can honestly say my life sucks.
When I was six years old my dad left me, my mom, and my unborn little brother ,Andy. My mom said he was just going away on a business trip, but I think she said that more for herself. I knew he wasn't coming back. Mom took care of us. We were happy with her. She was a good mom.
Then one morning, a man tried to take me. My mom started yelling and screaming trying to beat the man up. The man pulled out a gun and shot her. Andy began yelling in his stroller. I'd ran to my mom's side crying as hard as I could into her side.
The man that had shot my mom, Nathen, was taken away. That wouldn't be the last of him though. I'd be seeing much more of Nathen. The name even now sends bad memories through me. I'll tell you about him either.
That same night Andy died. We got to my Uncle's house. The police said he would be a guardian from now on. That night I reflect on often. I think about how I could have saved Andy. I was too shocked though.
"Uncle" Tom had thrown Andy to the ground and he hit the table. He died instantly. I watched with shocked eyes as he explained the rules to me in language that is too foul for me to even think. Basically he told me I was to drop out of school, that I was to wait on him and his wife hand and foot, and I was to talk to no one about what went on in this house. I was also unallowed to leave the house, unless they were watching me. And they told me that my mom had told on them years ago, and that she had payed. I was to not allowed cry. If they saw me cry they'd beat it out of me.
They said if I disobeyed them in any way they would beat me untill I got it through my head. I learned quickly to do whatever they said.
Over the years I got books from the neighbors and I learned everything I was supposed to learn. I had a high school education by age 12. I studied about marine animals constantly. I tried to pretend that I was somewhere else. Somewhere in the ocean riding on the back of a whale, or swimming with a hammerhead shark.
Reality would come all to quickly. As the years passed things were not as bad as the first night, but it still wasn't good. Tom and Amanda were hardly home. They had a drug business and were constantly high. They sometimes just beat me for fun. I'd learned to just shut down when they beat me. If I thought about good things it wouldn't hurt as bad.
When I was 13 Tom said Nathen was out of prision. That was the first time I left the house, since my mom died. It felt good to see the world again. The trees. The sun. It was all so wonderful. Then we arrived at Nathen's house. He gave Tom twenty dollars, then Tom left.
That night Nathen took advantage of me. He raped me. When he was done, I ran. Ran as far away as I could into the night. Eventually I tired and ended up in a park. I sat on the swing and tears fled to my eyes. I'd be paying for this tomorrow, but all I wanted to do was cry.
I wanted to feel my mom's arms around me or Andy's soft cheeks. I just wanted someone to hug me and tell me it was okay. I wanted someone to care.
There was no one in the world like that though. I watched cars passing. I'd seen people run out in front of cars on T.V. Maybe death was the only option left.
As I sat there thinking, I saw something on top of the slide. I curiously jumped off the swing and climbed to get it.
It was a CD player and a CD case. In big white letters it read "Jonas Brothers It's About Time". The case was red and had three teenage boys on it.
I gently put the CD not thinking of who put it there and why. 3 beautiful voices filled my head. I pulled out a lyric book and read through the lyrics. By the end I had the biggest smile on my face. My face wasn't used to that smiling feeling. I hadn't felt it in years. I just couldn't stop.
These three guys would care if I took myself out of the world. I'd found someone that cared, even if they didn't know who I was.
I just had this feeling in my heart that they would care. Kevin, Nick, and Joe became a huge part of my life.
Chapter Two Welcome To My Life:
I woke up in Nathen's room. I gently struggled out of his arms and grabbed my jacket and Ipod as I left the room. Tom had said if I stayed with Nathen three times a week I could get a job at the local aquariam. I just hand to share my profit with him. My job at the aquariam was to be a sleepover hostess. I would give a tour of the place, explain facts about the animals, and just be their helper.
Tonight was my first night on the job and I was overjoyed.
I plugged my earphones in and let the Jonas Brothers voices feel my ears and take away all the pain of last night. I had a huge smile on my face within seconds. I remembered they were here in Idaho. Nick was his new girlfriend Alexis. She was from here in Idaho. As a matter of fact she lived not too far from Nathen's place. I couldn't go looking for them though. I'd get killed.
Alexis had gone to a concert here in Idaho ,that I'd obviously been unable to attend. Nick and her had fallen madly in love. It made me wish that would happen to me.
One of the Jonas Brothers falling in love with me would absoulutely complete my life.
I sighed as I got to Tom and Amanda's place. I hoped this day would pass quickly.
I began daydreaming about ways to meet the Jonas Brothers. They were all silly, but they got me through the day.
The next thing I knew it was 9:00. Time to go to the aquariam for the first night on the job. I excitedly walked to the aquariam.
When I got there a woman was waiting. "Hi I'm Samantha. Alexis's mom. Sorry she's going to be a little late."
"It's fine." I smiled opening the doors into the aquariam. She followed me in.
"She turned 15 today correct?" I asked.
"Yeah. Her boyfriend and his brothers just flew in today." she said.
My heart stopped. No. It had to be a coincedence.
"They've been on tour and she's been spending all day with Nick." her mom laughed. "Do you know a band called the Jonas Brothers?"
I stared at her wide eyed and open mouthed. My proffessional facade completely gone. The Jonas Brothers were coming here? Here?
"I'm guessing your a fan?" her mom laughed at my reaction.
I nodded. "Yeah."
"I guess this is a dream come true for you." her mom smiled.
"Yes. Yes it is." I said trying to control my voice.
"I think it's time for me to go. Alexis should be here shortly." she said.
"Okay thank you." I said struggling to keep from hyperventallating.
As she exited the aquariam I leaned against the tank. "Oh my god."
I was about to meet the three guys that were probably the only people in the world that cared about me at all.
"Hello?" I heard a voice.
My heart beat frantically as I saw Kevin Jonas looking around.
He saw me and approached me. "Are you our hostess?"
I stared at him dumbfounded. Kevin Jonas was actually standing in front of me. Don't act like a crazy fan Charlene. He won't like that. "I-I'm Charlene." I stuttered. Smooth.
"Are you our hostess?" he laughed again.
"Um yeah. Sorry." I mumbled.
“Kevin they have a shark tank.” Joe said excitedly running to his side.
Kevin laughed. “Would you mind if we looked around?”
I shook my head. “I-I’ll give you a tour. That’s the first thing I’m supposed to do." I stuttered.
Kevin smiled at me.
I showed them all the animals and told them the basic facts about each animal. I was nervous so I think I basically gave them false information. I struggled to remember even the most basic facts about each animal. After that I went to go get to part two of the sleepover.
Snacks. They all went off on their own. When I came back in Kevin was the only one standing there. I assumed the others were still off exploring.
"Um.. Here's the snacks." I mumured.
"I'm guessing that your a fan?" Kevin smiled at me.
"Yeah I am." I said nervously.
"I guess you're more than a little surprised to see us here." he laughed.
"Yeah I can definetely say I was." I laughed nervously.
"You really don't need to be nervous around us. We're just normal people." he smiled gently.
"Yeah I'm really sorry about that. You and your brothers have just been there alot for me. I was just so excited to actually meet you guys." I sighed.
"It's okay we love hearing we have that sort of impact on peoples lives." he smiled.
I couldn't help but smile back. Something about his smile made me want to smile.
I realized that I must have looked like a complete moron smiling at him like that. So I excused myself to go get the bedding for the sleepover room.
"Wait can't I go with you?" he asked.
"Won't your brothers wonder where you went?" I asked curiously.
"They'll be fine." he laughed.
"Okay." I said.
"Do you think you can tell me a little bit more about the sharks. Now that you're not so nervous?" he asked.
"Of course." I said.
He helped me carry the blankets to the room.
"Thanks." I said as he put a blanket on one of the beds.
"Don't worry about it." he smiled.
I led him to the shark tank. This time I wasn't as nervous. I gave him every single little fact that I knew about the hammerhead shark. He seemed honestly interested in what I was saying. After I got done ranting about how humans were destroying their enviorment he stopped me.
"You know a lot about these sharks don't you?" he asked.
"Quite a bit. I stay in my room all day studying them." I smiled watching one of them swimming.
"What got you into them?" he asked.
"While my mom and I used to watch these shows on Discovery Channel. They were all about these different kinds of sharks. Something about them just sparked my interest." I sighed remembering those days with my mom.
"You act like she's not there anymore." he said.
"She's not. She died when I was seven. Along with my brother Andy." I said. I decided it was safe to give out that much information.
"I'm sorry. How'd she die?" he asked.
"Natural causes." I said the lie coming easily.
"Oh I see. What about your brother?" he asked.
"Died when he was just a baby. He fell off a couch." I said.
"That's sad." he said.
"I know." I sighed.
"Who do you live with now?" he asked.
"Just my uncle. He's not around too much." I said.
"Oh. So you pretty much take care of yourself?" he asked.
"Yep. Have for about 10 years." I said.
"Do you go to school still?" he asked.
"No." I said. I didn't want to say too much. It was time to change the subject. I noticed a shark. "See that shark?" I asked.
He looked and got interested in it.
How much I wanted to tell him everything. Everything him and his brothers had helped me through. How much I wanted him to understand.
I sighed.
"Something wrong?" he asked.
"No. Sorry." I said explaining why the shark was doing what it was doing.
My mind wasn't fully into what I was explaining. I was daydreaming about what it'd be like if they knew. What they'd say.
"Hey Kevin Alexis said there's a fair in town tomorrow and she wants us to go. You in?" Joe asked running toward us after I'd finished explaining.
"Of course." he laughed.
"I have to go. You guys have a good night." I smiled.
"Do you really have to?" Kevin asked.
"I have nothing left to do here." I said.
"Why don't you hang out with us?" Joe asked.
"Really?" I asked surprised.
"Why not?" Joe laughed.
I nodded. Then I thought about how I'd be in trouble with Tom and Amanda. "Actually I can't. I have to get home. Sorry."
Kevin's face dropped. "Oh. Alright. Thanks Charlene."
I smiled. "No thank you guys. You guys have helped me through my life."
Joe smiled. "Hope to see you around."
"You too." I smiled going toward the door.
As I reached the door I heard someone call my name.
I turned around. "Wait. Would you mind joining us at the fair tomorrow? It's on us." Kevin said.
"I don't think I can." I said.
"Please." he said.
The look on his face made me smile. "I'll find a way."
"Thank you. Where do you want me to meet you?" he asked.
I gave him a McDonalds close to my house and told him to meet me at 10 A.M. I was scared I'd get in trouble if I gave him the actual adress. Tom and Amanda were luckily gone from 9 in the morning untill about 8 at night doing who knows what. I'd be safe.
"Cool. I'll see you tomorrow." he smiled.
"Yeah. See you tomorrow." I smiled leaving.
Chapter Three Cinderella:
I woke up early in the morning. I felt like singing a song out loud. Yesterday had been the best night of my entire life. I danced downstairs.
Tom glared at me, but said nothing as I cooked breakfest.
It was eight. Tom and Amanda would be leaving shortly. Then I would have to take a shower and make the half hour walk down to McDonalds. Butterflies flooded my stomach as I though about seeing Nick, Joe, and Kevin again.
Tom and Amanda ate and then left giving me a few chores to do. I quickly did them and jumped in the shower.
I dressed in a nice pair of jeans and a graphic slim fit tee. I quickly brushed through my hair and skipped down the stairs.
I nearly jogged the whole way to McDonalds and arrived 10 minutes early. Suddenly I saw a face that made my heart drop instantly.
Nathen. I ran into the restraunt. I put the hood on my sweatshirt up to hide my face. Then I saw Kevin walking around outside looking for me.
"Oh no." I muttered.
Kevin came in the restraunt and saw me. "Hey Ch-" I covered his mouth quietly afraid Nathen would turn and see me.
I covered his mouth untill we got to his car.
"Why'd you just do that?" he asked confused.
"Um. I just didn't want someone to see me." I said.
"Uh. Okay. Let's go. What time do you need to be home?" he asked getting over the shock of my sudden attack.
"7:30." I said.
"Alright. Thanks again for joining me. Joe's girlfriend Taylor is in town now, so they're all going to be all lovey and ignore me." Kevin sighed.
I laughed. "For that I just might ignore you."
"Uncool." he said faking seriousness.
I smiled. "I wouldn't do that."
"Somehow I know that. You seem too nice." he laughed.
"That's what my mom used to say. That I was too nice." I smiled.
"You sound you really loved her. Did you have a dad?" he asked.
"Yeah. He left when my brother was born. Haven't seen him since." I said.
"Was he one of those dad's that don't care?" Kevin asked.
"Yeah. My mom said he was on an extended business trip, but I think that's what she wanted to believe." I sighed.
"How old are you?" he asked.
"17." I said.
"You seem a lot more mature then most 17 year olds." he said.
"That I've never heard before." I laughed.
He smiled. "So did you drop out of school?"
"Not really." I said. I could make Tom see at least a little bit like a bad guy. "Tom wouldn't get me enrolled after my mom died. I haven't been to school since 2nd grade."
"2nd grade?" Kevin asked in complete shock.
"Yeah. I taught myself to read." I said honestly. "I got books about science and math, so it's not like I'm stupid or anything. I have a high school education. I just taught myself."
"How'd you know it all?" he asked.
"I don't know. I just kinda did. And neighbors would help me on the stuff I didn't." I said.
"I can't even imagine what it must've been like having no one around." Kevin said.
"You get used to it.I kind of preferred it. I kind of just wanted to be alone all the time." I said.
"You're mom dying must've traumatized you." Kevin said.
"It did. And then shortly after my little brother dying didn't help." I sighed.
This was good. I was telling him the story in a way he wouldn't get in trouble.
"Did my brothers and I help you with dealing?" he asked.
"Yes you did. Alot." I said. "I think if I hadn't of found you guys I would still be that sad depressed little girl"
I felt Kevin grab my hand. "I'm really happy we could help. Have you ever had a friend?"
"Not since I was seven." I said loving the feeling of my hand in his.
"Well you can consider me a friend. Always." he murmured tightening his grip on my hand lightly.
Tears filled my eyes. "Thank you."
He smiled at me.
"I can't believe I'm crying right now." I sighed wiping my tears keeping my other hand in Kevin's.
"Everyone cries. Don't worry about it Charlene." he said.
"I'm not supposed to cry." I mumbled.
"Who said that?" he asked.
"No one. I'm sorry." I said.
"Charlene it's perfectly fine." he laughed.
I smiled. "Thank you."
He smiled back at me. "You seem like a really strong girl. You know it's okay to cry sometimes don't you?" he asked.
"Yes. Thank you Kevin. You're really sweet." I murmured.
He smiled. "After all you've been through. You deserve at least one person to be nice. I'm happy to be that person."
We arrived at the fair and Kevin let go of my hand as we got out. Joe, his girlfriend, Alexis, and Nick were waiting. They asll smiled at me.
I saw Joe murmur something to Kevin. Kevin punched him and muttered "Shut up."
"Ow." Joe said.
Kevin rolled his eyes and paid for us to go in.
"Thank you for letting me come here with you guys. I've never been to something like this." I said with a smile.
"It's no problem." Joe smiled.
"Hey guys I'm going to go grab Charlene something to eat. We'll see you guys later." Kevin said grabbing my arm as we walked off.
I waved to the others. Kevin smiled at me. "We're going to get ignored by them soon, so we'll just go off on our own for a while."
I laughed. "You're so mean to your brothers."
"No I love my brothers, I just get sick and tired of hearing. 'Oh Alexis I love you so much'" Kevin said imitating Nick's voice.
I smiled. "Yeah that would get pretty annoying."
"You want a water?" he asked as we stopped at a booth.
"Yeah thanks." I said as he handed me a water. We sat at a picnic table.
"So you've never been to something like this?" he asked taking a sip of his water.
"Not that I remember. I think I went to DisneyLand when I was like four." I said.
"Was your dad there?" he asked.
"I can't remember." I sighed.
"Hmm. You seem like you have hard feelings against him." he mused.
"Well he left me and my mom. He's not exactly my favirote person." I muttered.
"I completely understand, but do you ever wish you could find him?" Kevin asked staring at me.
"I've tried." I admitted.
"What was his name?" he asked.
"Charles Lee Miller. That's about the only thing I know about him." I said.
"Do you still want to find him?" Kevin asked.
"It's a little too late now." I said.
"I'm sorry." he said sincerely.
I changed the subject. "So what was Joe telling you earlier?" I asked.
Kevin suddenly looked really nervous. "Nothing, he was just sticking his nose in my business."
"Tell me what he said. I promise I won't laugh." I said.
"Yeah I know, but I just don't want to creep you out or anything. I like hanging out with you." he murmured.
"Tell me please." I begged now curious.
"Joe thinks I like you." Kevin said.
I blushed a little and looked down.
"Told you." he sighed.
"Do you like me Kevin?" I asked.
Kevin laughed nervously. "Yeah a little."
I smiled. "I like you too Kevin."
He smiled at me. "Let's go ride some rides."
I laughed as he grabbed my hand and held it gently in his as we caught up with the others.
We spent all day riding rides. After what seemed like a couple hours we went to a local pizza place for dinner.
"I can't belive you were scared of the rollercoaster." Joe teased me.
"I've never done that type of thing." I laughed pushing him.
"Still you want to swim with deadly creatures, yet you're scared to ride a little rollercoaster." Joe laughed.
I rolled my eyes as he walked off to sit with his girlfriend. I hung back with Kevin.
"This place is nice." Kevin murmured watching people dance. "Do you want to dance with me?"
"I don't really dance Kevin." I laughed.
"Neither do I. Come on please?" He asked.
"Alright." I smiled as he led me to the dance area. He put his hand on my back and put my hand in his. I put my hand on his shoulder. I smiled as he stared into my eyes. This felt so perfect. Being here with Kevin, I felt like we were the only two people on earth. There was no Tom and Amanda. I was never sad while I stared into Kevin's eyes.
We danced for a few minutes then I glanced at the time. 8:30. "No freaking way." I said instantly pulling away from Kevin.
"Charlene what's wrong?" he asked shocked.
"I-I have to go Kevin. I'm sorry. Thank you for everything." I said running out the door.
"Charlene wait!" I heard Kevin call.
I kept running praying he wouldn't follow. I ran into the house as I arrived. Fear went through me as I saw Tom sitting on the couch. "Where were you?" he glared.
"I-I went tot he aquariam." I lied.
"Liar!" he yelled jumping at me and pushing me into the wall. I hit it. Hard. "Who'd you tell?"
"I didn't tell anyone Tom. I've kept my mouth sealed." I cried as he kicked me.
I heard someone enter the room. "She hasn't told me anything about you. Please let her go." I heard Kevin say.
I was too afraid to say anything.
"That little boy band you're obsessed with?" Tom roared with laughter.
Kevin helped me up. "Kevin are you insane?" I managed to say.
Tom stopped laughing. "You better leave boy.Keep your mouth shut and I'll let you leave."
"I'm not leaving untill Charlene goes with me." Kevin glared.
"She's not leaving anytime soon. I just struck a deal with a friend. She's going to live with her new husband.
My heart broke into a million pieces. "I am not." I defied.
"Nathen payed good money for you and it won't go to waste. " Tom said.
"She's not going with him. She's not staying here. Come on Charlene." Kevin said. He didn't comprehend how insane Tom actually was.
Tom jumped at him, but got me as I stood in front to defend the attack. "Kevin go now." I yelled using all my strenth to fight Tom. Kevin took a look at Tom in fear, but then shook his head. "Trust me Kevin go." I grunted as Tom threw punches. Then Tom hit me. Hard enough to send me barreling into the wall again. This time four times as hard.
I screamed as I felt my head hit the wall with great force. The last thing I remember was Tom and Amanda running out the door. Then someone picking me up.
Chapter Four A Time Of Forgetting:
I woke up in an unfamiliar room. I looked over and saw Kevin laying across the room. I sighed and his eyes instantly opened. He had a giant black eye.
I glared at him. "You know you're an idiot right?"
He frowned. "Did you expect me to see that and not do anything?"
"No I expected you to not follow me in the first place." I countered.
"Charlene. I just didn't want that to be the last time I saw you." Kevin said.
"Kevin that's the way it should be. I had a few days of fun. I didn't expect you to stick around. I'm going back to Tom and Amanda's or Nathens or wherever I belong. And you're going back to Texas." I glared.
"They skipped town." Kevin said.
I stared at him shocked. "I'm dead. I'm so beyond dead."
"Why'd you be dead they're gone?" Kevin said.
"That doesn't mean anything Kevin! I know too much. They have to get rid of me." I cried.
"They'll have to get through me first." Kevin glared.
"You're getting involved with the wrong person. You need to leave now." I said getting up.
He grabbed my hand. "Charlene I think I'm getting involved with teh exact right person. I'm not going away unless you go with me." he said.
"Kevin seriously. Go." I said.
"Do you want me to leave?" he asked.
His question caught me off guard. I was speechless because of course I didn't want him to leave, but if he stayed it'd only put him in danger. I wouldn't let that happen.
"Well do you?" he pressed.
"Of course not, but you have to." I said.
"What did that Nathen guy do?" he asked suddenly.
"Why does it matter?" I asked.
"I just want to know. I want the whole story since I'm getting involved." he said.
"You're not getting involved Kevin." I said.
He waited quietly.
I sighed. "He raped me."
Kevin stared at me. "Did you mom die of natural causes or is that a coverup?"
"Nathen killed her. Tome hired him. She told my dad so she payed. I have no idea if they got to my dad or not. I honestly couldn't care less." I said.
Kevin's eyes saddened. "What about your brother?"
"Tom killed him too." I said.
"Charlene I didn't know it was this serious." he murmured.
"I saw my mom and my brother murdered right before my eyes. Then I had to sleep with the man that killed my mom. I'm pretty messed up aren't I?" I half smiled.
"You are not really blaming yourself right now are you?" Kevin asked raising his eyebrows.
I bit my lip."I could've saved Andy and ran, but I didn't. I was just too shocked and afraid. Then it was too late."
"You were a typical little girl. You didn't know what to do." Kevin said.
"I'll never be able to live it down. I had the chance to save my brother, but I let it slip." I said looking at my hands.
Kevin put his hand on my cheek and made me face him. "Charlene don't let that bother you. I promise none of this is your fault."
I looked into his eyes and found the same thing as the night we danced. "Okay."
He smiled and stood up. "Where's everyone else?" I asked curiously.
"They all hate you now." Kevin sighed.
"Oh. They're mad about you getting hurt?" I asked.
"That and they think I should stay in my own business. And not get in trouble." he said.
"Maybe you should take their advice Kevin." I said.
"Not in a million years." he smiled.
I stroked his cheek. "I'll find a place to stay here. I don't want your brothers hating you."
"They'll open their hearts. And you'll be staying with me in Texas thank you very much. I have a room to spare." he smiled.
"Thank you Kevin. I'll pay you back." I said.
"Don't worry about it Charlene. I'm helping a friend." he said.
I smiled at him. "So where are we exactly?" I asked.
"In a hotel room." he laughed. "Are you hungry?"
"Yeah. Let's go get something eat. I'm starving." I said.
We went out to a car I assumed he'd rented. Then we drove to the nearest fast food restraunt. I was starting to feel a little parnoid. Tom could jump anytime. It'd just take one shot then I'd be dead. And if Kevin was around he would be too. "Charlene are you coming or what?" Kevin said holding the door for me.
"Uh yeah. Sorry." I said following him into the restraunt. He ordered for both of us being I kept looking over my shoulder making sure Tom didn't pop out. I sat down across from him silently.
"Charlene are you alright?" Kevin asked.
"Yeah I'm just a little paranoid. Tom can kill me at any time he pleases." I sighed.
"Charlne it will be fine. " he murmured.
"Kevin you don't know Tom. He won't stop at anything to get the person he wants." I muttered.
"How many people has he killed?" he asked.
"At least 10." I said. "And every single one has been successful."
Our food arrived and broke through our tense bublbe. The woman gave us our bag. Kevin thanked her and looked at me sharply as she walked away.
"Let's make a deal." he said.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"I mean let's make a deal that will benifit you and me." he said.
"What's the deal?" I asked.
"If you completely forget about Tom and Amanda, I will take you out for the best day of your life." he said.
"Really?" I asked.
He smiled. "Why not?"
"Okay." I said.
"No more Tom and Amanda?" he asked.
"You can't just expect me to forget completely, but I'll try." I said.
"Thank you." he murmured.
We ate qucikly and went back to the hotel. He had to leave so I stayed up in the room most the day. When he came back he had pizza and a few movies.
I smiled at him, he looked upset. "What's up?" I asked.
"Joe told my mom lies about you." Kevin said burying his face in his hands. "She was the only one that would've listened and now it's ruined."
"They don't like me at all do they?" I sighed.
"They just don't see you the way I do. They say I'm blinded because I havea little crush on you, but there's something more there." he said.
"So what does this have to do with anything?" I asked dying a little inside that he had a crush on me.
"My mom won't let you stay in Texas." he said.
I looked down.
"But you'll be going with me to the Bahamas for a few weeks. To let things slow down a little bit. So I can try and explain to her." Kevin smiled holding my face in his hands.
"Kevin! I'm not letting you choose me over your family." I glared.
"It won't be pernament." he said.
"Am I really that bad?" I asked looking down.
"Not at all, you've just had a rough life. They don't understand that. They think you made this whole thing up to get our attention." he said.
"I would never do that." I said.
"I know that, but they don't. Give them a little time. Let them try and warm up to the idea of you." he said.
"What if they don't like me even after that?" I asked worried.
"Charlene do you want the truth?" he asked. I nodded. "I think this whole thing will blow over when you tell them your side of the story. We have to give them a little time though."
"You really think so?" I asked.
"I know so." he smiled. "Just tell them everything. I know it'll be hard, but everything will be a lot better once they know."
"I will." I smiled as he handed me a piece of pizza.
"I'm going to have to stay here for the night. Then tomorrow we'll go buy you some clothes." he smiled.
"Thank you so much." I said hugging him.
I felt him smile against my shoulder. "You must really like pizza."
I laughed and for the next couple hours we watched movies and ate pizza. By the third movie I began to get tired and could barely keep my eyes open.
"Are you tired?" Kevin asked moving his arm from my shoulders.
I yawned in response. I felt him go over to the other bed. "Goodnight Charlene."
"Night Kevin. Thank you again for everything." I said.
"You're welcome." he said.
I woke up to quiet guitar playing. I looked over and saw Kevin staring out the window of the hotel room playing an acoustic guitar. He noticed me and stopped. "I'm sorry for waking you. I just felt a little inspired and was writing a song."
"It sounds great. I love it. What inspired you?" I asked curious.
"Just the whole situation that you're in." Kevin smiled
I smiled back shyly. "You-you wrote a song about me?"
"Kind of. Maybe. Yes. I did. Is that weird?" he asked nervous.
"I think it's really sweet Kevin." I smiled.
"I'll play it for you when it's finished." he promised. "Well we better go get some clothes for you. Want to take a quick shower?"
"Uh yeah. What time is it?" I asked.
"Noon." he smiled.
I didn't want to wake you, but I guess I did anyway." he laughed. "We'll get some lunch after you're done in the shower."
"Thank you." I said walking off. Never in my life would I be able to thank him enough. He was so willing to help me. So willing to give up his brothers and family to help a friend. A friend that put him in danger he couldn't even imagine.
As we were out that day I thanked him at least 30 times and he finally said. "Charlene you don't need to keep thanking me. I'm happy to help honestly."
I'd smiled. How did I get so lucky as to find such a nice guy to help me?
I had a feeling this wouldn't last though.
Chapter Five Welcome To The Bahamas .:
We woke up early Friday morning to catch our flight. We were sitting in the terminal when I finally told Kevin something. "Kevin I've never been on a plane. I'm a little nervous."
He smiled. "That should be the least of your worries Charlene."
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"I'm scared that the press is going to be waiting at the airport when we arrive. I really don't want that kind of drama right now." he sighed.
I stiffened. As I realized that if the press took pictures I'd be in trouble. Tom and Amanda would find us really easily. Then I stopped remembering my deal with Kevin.
"I know, I'm afraid of that too." he said realizing why I was tense. "I think that I should have Big Rob meet us there. He'll take care of the press."
I nodded and he stroked my arm. "Now Charlene no worrying about anything, while we're in the bahamas have some fun." he smiled. I nodded. "Promise?" he asked.
"Promise." I laughed. They called for our flight and Kevin grabbed my hand as we boarded the plane. I was extremely tense as I realized that in a matter of minutes we'd be up in the air.
"I'll share my music with you. It'll help with the flight." he said handing me an earphone. Kevin smiled and took my hand in his as he quietly stroked it trying to calm me down.
I took deep breaths as the plane started to move. I closed my eyes and focused on the song. It was a country song that I'd heard on the radio as a child. The familiar tune calmed me and I payed attention to the lyrics and what they meant.
"Charlene we're in the air." Kevin said when the song ended.
"Should I look out the window?" I asked.
"I would. Trust me you won't fall." he promised.
I leaned over him gently and looked out the window. Everything was getting smaller and smaller. I took a couple of deep breaths as I sat back down realizing how high up we were.
Kevin laughed. "This is oddly amusing."
I rolled my eyes and looked down pretending that we were on the ground. I honestly felt like I was going to throw up. I felt Kevin stroking my back. I sat back up as the queasiness left.
He smiled. "Better?"
"Yeah. I'll be okay." I promised.
"You do know that we're going to be on planes for the majority of the day?" he asked.
"And there goes feeling better." I said grabbing my stomach.
He smiled. "Sorry I had to do it. Why don't you tell me a little bit about your mom?"
I smiled. "Well, she was like an older version of me except a lot more girlie. I'm serious every single morning she would stand in the bathroom and curl every piece of her hair into ringlets. Then she would do the same to me every Sunday before church. Then after church, my dad would stay and help out . My mom and I would go home and watch shows about whales, and lots of other marine animals. Before my dad and mom started fighting, he'd sit me on his lap every night and read me a story. I'm not sure if he actually really loved me. I think he did at some point at least."
He frowned. "That's like really uncool."
"I know." I sighed. Then I started explaining every little detail.
Then In heard a bell. "Oh my god are we crashing?" I said panicking.
Kevin burst out laughing. "No Charlene that means we've landed."
"Oh." I said looking around realizing everyone was gone.
The second plane ride wasn't nearly as bad as the first. I might even say it was fun. Kevin had challenged me to a game on his ipod. Then he kept getting mad that I was winning. I had to admit. It was kinda adorable watching Kevin get competitive.
When we arrived we went straight to the hotel and went to bed.
I woke up to bright light shining on my face. I saw Kevin across the room playing his guitar looking out the window again. I smiled and walked over and wrapped my arms around him. "Goodmorning."
He smiled surprised. "Morning. What do you want to do today?"
I laughed. "I don't know. Maybe we should go swim with sharks?"
He smiled. "You're the first girl I've heard say that."
"What'd you expect me to say?" I asked.
"I don't know. Go take a shower, then we'll go." he laughed.
"Alright." I smiled walking to the shower. After my shower Kevin was waiting outside.
"You hungry?" he asked.
"Yeah let's go eat breakfest before we go." I said.
He grabbed my hand as we exited the room. Big Rob met us outside the hotel room. "There's a bunch of people downstairs Kevin."
Kevin sighed. "Sorry Charlene. Hopefully this is the only time we'll have to do this. You're going to have to sit away from me. I'm so sorry."
"It's okay Kevin. Where do you want to meet up?" I asked.
"Just when you see me get up follow me a few minutes later and we'll pull around back okay?" he said.
I nodded. "See ya later Kevin."
"Wait." he said as I was about to walk away.
"Yeah?" I asked turning back around.
"Um. Nevermind." he said looking down.
I smiled. "See you Kevin."
Then I walked downstairs and sat an empty table. Big Rob was right. This place was packed. I also saw a few press attacking Kevin as he got to a table. After I finished I waited for Kevin, a few minutes later he got up and left. I went around back to meet him.
I saw Big Rob sitting in the drivers seat and got in. Kevin smiled at me from the front seat. "Promise that won't happen again. We won't be in public places anymore." he said as I buckled in.
"Then where else are we going to go to see sharks?" I asked.
"My aunts a marine bioligist. She knows of this place, with lots of coral reef sharks. She said that we can swim with them there. Their supposedly harmless." he smiled.
"Coral reefs? Oh my gosh! I can't wait." I said remembering every little fact I knew about that type.
Kevin laughed. "There's a class my aunt's teaching right now so we can go in about an hour."
I pouted. "I want to swim now though."
"Wouldn't you rather hang out with me?" he asked.
I smiled. "Hm, sharks or you. I think I'll pick sharks."
He laughed. "Yeah right."
I smiled. "Yeah you're right."
He smiled as Big Rob got out.
"Charlene I need to talk to you." Kevin said facing me.
"Uh oh. That doesn't sound good." I said.
"It's not bad. Unless you think it's bad." he smiled.
"What is it?" I asked.
"Promise you'll listen?" he asked. " I really want you to hear me out on this."
I laughed. "Of course."
"Charlene, we've only known eachother a little while." he said.
"Yeah." I said waiting for him to continue.
"God nevermind. I need to find a better way to say this." he sighed.
"Kevin what is it?" I asked.
"I'll sound like a complete dork." he said looking down.
"You can't tell me you have something to say, then just change your mind." I said looking at him.
"How about this. I'll tell you tonight when I find the right way to say it?" he said.
I nodded. "Fine."
He smiled. "Trust me it's not bad. I have a feeling it might make you happy, but I'm not sure."
"Does it make you happy?" I asked.
"Yes it'd make me very happy." he laughed.
"Then it'll make me happy." I assured him.
He smiled as Big Rob got back in. "Amy called and said that we can go over there now. She got done earlier than expected." he said.
We drove to a small beach. I saw a woman waiting. Kevin instantly went up to her and hugged her. "Kevin! It's been so long how's your brothers? And your parents?"
"They're all fine. There's someone I want you to meet." he said stepped away motioning me forward.
I nervously stepped forward.
Amy smiled. "She's beautiful Kevin. Well done. I wonder why your parents don't like her?"
Kevin shrugged. "Only god knows."
She smiled. "So a little birdie tells me that someone would like to swim with sharks?"
I smiled. "That'd be me."
"He also told me that you were interested in marine biology?" she questioned.
"Yes. I used to work at a local aquariam." I said.
"Well it's good to have that sort of background. Looks good on a resume. Have you thought of any colleges?" she asked.
"Um. A few." I said.
"Good. Keep it up and you'll make it out here." she said.
"Auntie, I'm gonna go. I need to go do a few press things. Could you take her back to the hotel and get her dressed for dinner?" he winked.
She nodded in understanding. "Of course. Will you pick her up from there?"
"Yeah." he said waving to me before I asked questions.
I sighed.
"I've never seen that boy like this." she laughed. "I hope you know how special you are to him."
I smiled. "He's pretty special to me too."
